WHAT IS A MULTI-LIGAMENT KNEE RECONSTRUCTION?
The treatment and operation that’s best for your multi-ligament knee reconstruction is determined by several significant factors including your age, health history, extent of the harms specific ligaments injured and your history with other medicines and treatments. Multi-ligament knee reconstruction is needed when more than one ligament was torn or injured, which typically happens during high-impact trauma or falls.
WHEN IS A MULTI-LIGAMENT KNEE RECONSTRUCTION RECOMMENDED?
A multi-ligament injury requires prompt attention and without appropriate treatment can prevent you from having the ability to walk. If you are unsure of whether you have injured more than one ligament, it is important to seek medical attention. Doctor Frank will ask about your past health and the activity when the harm happened, then perform a physical exam to help diagnose your condition.
NONSURGICAL TREATMENTS FOR MULTI-LIGAMENT KNEE RECONSTRUCTION
In some instances, the injury is minor enough that the ligaments can mend by themselves. This is done by setting the joint where the ligaments are, generally the knee, in a brace that keeps the joint entirely immobile and entirely extended. Patients also are required to use crutches, to avoid placing any weight on the joint.
SURGICAL MULTI-LIGAMENT KNEE RECONSTRUCTION
In most cases, a multi-ligament knee reconstruction requires surgery. The goal is to reattach and repair the ligaments so that they are able to stabilize the joint again and function as normal.
